Lesson 5: Printing the letter "a"

We’re going to start printing with the letter A. The letter A is a great one to begin with, because there are quite a few other letters that are just A with a little something added at the end.

Once you learn how to make A, you’ll also be able to make some other letters too. Can you guess which ones?

Take a look at your alphabet page. Let’s circle all the letters that remind you of the letter A. We’ll start by circling A, of course. Then we can also circle D, G, and Q—great job! See how many letters you’re going to learn, just by starting with A?

Now, let’s talk about how big the letter A is. A usually takes up one line—from the bottom line to the top line. So when you make your A, the top of the letter should bump the top line, and the bottom should bump the bottom line.

If you go a little over or don’t quite reach, that’s okay! Don’t worry about it—but just try to keep A nice and centered between the lines.

Here’s how we form the letter A:

  • Start by making a small C shape, a gentle curve.

  • As you reach the bottom line, come back up, touch the top line,

  • then draw a straight line down until you touch the bottom line again.

That’s your A!

Now I want you to make three A’s in a row. Then stop and look at them.

Circle the one you like best.

Then make three more A’s, stop and look, and circle your favorite one again.
